Dark Eyes
- Simon Revere Mouer III

When the earth begins
to drain away
Once again the rebel hates
the world that shuns
his reasons

Then the passions
hate or fear resolves
to tears
Because she turned
with soft, dark eyes
And said
"I understand."

~

This poem had no title when I first wrote it, and I'm not sure the title I  give it now does it justice.  It is more about the positive influence of a woman in a young man's life influencing him to heel to society than that of the rebel himself.  With nothing more than an understanding look in her eyes a woman can turn a man from rage to calmness.  originally the poem said 'brown eyes' instead of 'dark eyes'.  But 'dark eyes', could be brown or black, or any color in the dark, which might appeal to a wider audience.  I wrote it after I first  met her down in Old Mexico.  I was trying to explain to her that I wanted to marry her, that I had been something of an outlaw before, but I wanted to settle down and raise a family and be part of the regular society.  I don't know that she understood a word I said, because i couldn't speak Spanish, and she couldn't speak English, but she turned her head and looked at me with those deep brown eyes and said "I understand."  And I read in that what I needed to hear, whether it was what she meant or not.
