The US consumer price index (CPI) is a measure of average price increases compiled from a standard basket of goods and services by the US Bureau of Labor. It is measured monthly.  The annual rate of inflation is commonly derived from CPI, usually using the December on December figures.  The CPI accurately reflects inflation over decades, but less accurately over months.  Cost of living increases (COLA) is commonly derived from the CPI.
